Yachting

Yachting is also known as the recreational sailing and is often carried out as a sport in most of the yacht clubs. Yachting is not a sport of today and has a prehistoric value attached to it. It is supposed to have started around 17th century in Netherland. Thereafter it paved its way to England form where yachting as a form of race conventionally started.
One of the most prestigious tournaments, America’s cup in the Yachting world began with an American Yacht Club located in the New York City being challenged in the year 1851. Till 1983, no yacht club could defeat the New York Yacht Club until it lost to Australia II. And in between the yacht racing or the yachting evolved. Similarly a considerable development happened in the class and variety of yachts used for racing purposes right from small dinghies to huge beasts.

In the developed world, the yacht racing and the dinghy racing are very common today. Such competitions can be usually seen in the part of the world where the weather conditions are favourable and where there are huge water bodies to support such activities. One can notice that the big yacht sports are generally conducted in salt water bodies, while the smaller yachts are usually raced in the rivers and lakes.

The racing yachts are of different varieties but they are usually differentiated as:

• Larger Yachts: these are big in size and let one go for extended voyages owing to their enormous facilities
• Smaller Harbour Racing Crafts: these include vessels as dinghies and skiffs.

Larger yachts are mostly raced in Open Ocean while yachting for these are also done on harbours. Will power and how good your equipments are usually get tested in a bad weather condition. The longest yachting events are "round-the-world" races. Also known as Fastnet race in the United Kingdom and Hobart Yacht Race in Sydney, these yachting events take months to get completed.

On a smaller craft called dinghies, too races are conducted. One mast is an essential in all and almost 3 crew members can accommodate in a dinghy. Some dinghies possess only one sail while most have two sloops and to sail with the wind, they have an enormous spinnaker. The design of dinghy varies from a small and slow craft to high speed and light weight vessels. This all depends upon the maturity of the crew who handle the vessel. You may see yachting of similar looking dinghies at the Summer Olympic Games.

For many yachting is a kind of lifestyle alone. Cruising is all about traveling continuously on boat and it may be a small trip or a big one that may continue from one island to another for months. If you are sufficient on your own, only then it is prescribed to go for long yachting tour. Knowledge of navigation, electrical and mechanical system, meteorology, first aid, radio, sea survival are really a must for a long time yachting.
A complete theoretical and practical knowledge is important to keep moving ahead in yachting.
