The First Sail

To sail is the dream of many people and it’s a pleasure to have your very first sail. It’s not only mesmerizing and exciting but filled with experience and lessons that are a must to learn. Bookish knowledge and practical knowledge are two different facets of sailing. To know how to sail is a different theory altogether and practical bringing it into action is entirely different.

We all have read enough to start with our very own sail but what we read is quite different to what we experience. One has to sail in order to understand the excitement of sea, the nervousness of being first time on a sailing trip, the fear to maintain all possible safety requirements and at the same time the feeling of overwhelm and happiness that finally one has brought his lost cherished desire to reality.

It’s really funny that just when your adrenaline starts rushing with excitement the moment the engine starts and you are off on your own to your very first sail. The engine is indeed a very important component of any boat and to sail has a lot to do with the engine moving. But engine is not all. There are many things that one has to keep in mind which includes the wheel.

We don’t realize the importance of the wheel when we read articles on sailing and the ways to sail. When you go behind that wheel for the first time, you feel like you are in the air and your confidence building after every minute. But when you are a first timer to sail, you often forget everything that you learnt about the speed. To hook the line, one has to have neither too slow nor too fast speed. But out of excitement over confidence people forget the same and have to suffer. This is the first lesson that your first sail teaches you. Remember that lining your boat is a huge task and becomes even bigger if you are a first timer on sail. It’s very important to be in the right speed and to realize that there are other boats waiting as well. If you hit them, you know what kind of consequences you may have to meet.

Many people face problems like the mooring rope wrapping around the prop. This makes the engine to stop and a novice does not know what to do. The best way to judge what has happened to your boat at such a moment is to look for a line under the water that is taut usually it yanks at the back side of the boat. The problem with such a difficulty is that the moment the shaft and prop rips away, the boat may even start sinking. The only thing that would bring you relief at this point of time is rewrapping the mooring line over the shaft.

It’s not necessary that everyone would face similar problems during their first sail or people would at all face problems. But still first sail is very important as it teaches you innumerous lessons that even thousands of books on sailing can’t teach you.
