Preparations for Offshore Sailing Journeys
Everyone gets a relaxing and soothing experience when they go sailing. This is why majority eventually venture into offshore sailing journeys. Always bear in mind however, that it is imperative that you take precautionary measures to ensure your safety when you go for an offshore sailing trip.
First in line if you have a sailboat with a motor is, you should make sure to have boat checked by a mechanic a week or two prior to your offshore sailing adventure to ensure that it is up for a long distance trip. Also make sure that your sail is in tiptop condition offshore sailing adventure
You also have to make sure you have all the equipment you need prior to casting off such as an automatic light, a horseshoe lifebuoy, a buoyant heaving line, a danbuoy, spare cans of fuel that are properly labelled, a set of oars, day and night flares, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, an auxiliary outboard tow rope, a bailer anchor with a long line of rope and chain and a lot of drinking water because chances of dehydration occurring at sea are very high.
The most important part after securing your sailboat for your offshore sailing adventure is the weather. Never ever leave without checking the weather not only from where you are but in all areas that you would be passing through to on your way towards your destination. In the event that the weather wouldn’t be that favourable, it is best to either alter your route or changing your schedule and finding a secure place to dock temporarily.
When you’ve secured everything and are just about ready to leave, remember to dress properly for offshore sailing taking in consideration the length of your exposure to the sun while on an offshore sailing adventure trip. You need to protect your skin from long exposure to the harmful rays of the sun on your skin so take with you an ample supply of sun block and applying it in regular intervals.
Even if you are bound to be exposed to the sun during the day, also remember that you are on the water and will be exposed to the cold at night so you need to wear warm and protective clothing otherwise, you can get really exhausted as well from long exposures to the cold wind. Include a head gear, gloves and non-slip sandals or footwear as well because all these body parts gets exposed equally to the cold and wet slippery surfaces.
Remember to have a whistle that can function well even if it gets wet as this can save you in case you fall overboard. I’m sure you’ve seen the Titanic and how a whistle helped rescue teams locate the people needed to be rescued. In additional precaution, always wear a life jacket on offshore sailing trips. This could save your life as well.
Now that you’re all set to go, one last reminder is to remember to hold on to something at all times as offshore sailing can get a little rough due to the waves and wind of unfamiliar waters.
