Starting out your kayaking adventure
After the inclusion of kayaking in the Olympics, people are now eager get into adding this to their list of activities to pursue. However, getting ready to go on a kayaking adventure entails a lot of research, acquiring the right tools and learning the basics prior to even considering getting yourself your own kayak.
Like any other sport or water adventure, it is imperative that you learn the basic skills and tools needed prior to just getting yourself at the very least, an inflatable kayak and paddling your way around the water. Mind you, it isn’t that easy to paddle your way around a body of water that has waves or current.
You can initially try to manoeuvre your inflatable kayak in a swimming pool to get the feel of paddling however even if you can paddle your way around a calm body of water, it is still fairly dangerous to assume that you are equipped to go on a kayaking adventure in the sea, river or lake.
Attending a basic kayaking class is really appropriate to equip yourself about kayaking and the skills you need. Also, even after you have finished your kayaking class, do not attempt to go kayaking solo. Initially go on a tandem with a friend who has experience in kayaking. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
One very important rule that you have to follow prior to going kayaking is that, just like any other sport or activity requiring use of your muscles, stretch out your upper body muscles specially your arms because you will use them a lot in kayaking and they will tire easily and failure to do so could even result to muscle strain or worse, injure yourself.
Basic kayaking skills
The very first thing that you will learn in kayaking class is how is how to sit properly in a kayak to prevent your kayak from tipping over because of lack of balance while you’re paddling. It is imperative as well that you are comfortable in your sitting position.
Next in line is how to handle a paddle. It is important to know how to hold a paddle and have a firm grip for easy manoeuvring without injuring your wrist. After which, you will be taught how to steer properly as it is one of the most important skills to have when running on water with a current.
You will then eventually learn which type of kayak is best for each body of water be it a sea, river, lake or still waters. You will learn to decipher a strip-built kayak, skin on frame kayak, folding kayak, sit-on-top kayak and recreational kayaks. On top of this, you will learn about precautionary measures, the dangers, how to handle certain situations that could arise on each body of water and safety tips for when you go kayaking on these different bodies of water and what tools and equipments you ought to have in your possession prior to going on your kayaking adventure.
After you have learned all these, then, it’s now safe to wish you a great kayaking adventure experience.
