Boat brokerage – the principles & strategies
Effective boat brokerage is really all about value for the buyer and seller. Just like a house, the current market trends will determine a fair price for all those involved. The strategies involved through boat brokerage are planned around identifying the right marketplace to sell the vessel. If it’s a luxury boat you wouldn’t want to sell it on eBay, unless you were thinking of auctioning.
Preparation
A boat brokerage agency will prepare a concise distribution list for print and multimedia applications relevant to the value and condition of the boat. This list should be readily available at shows too.
In the same way that you would prepare your home for sale, the period of boat brokerage is a good opportunity to invest in improvements to secure a profitable sale. It’s worth remembering that the vessel should be presented in its best possible light. Professional photography is a must particularly for top-of-the-rage crafts.
Take out everything from the vessel that’s not included in the agreed inventory. Everything should be as clean and attractive as possible even for the inspection by the boat brokerage agent, remember they are the ones who will fix the asking price and write the attractive sales copy. The better the vessel looks the better the asking price.
Documentation
The paperwork can be overwhelming during the boat brokerage process. All the documents should be checked that they are up-to-date and readily available. These documents may include:
* Ownership certificates
* Security Agreements
* Bills of sale
* Transfer titles
Just like if you were buying a car a test drive is not out of the question either and many boat brokerage deals require it as standard procedure. During this trial a marine surveyor may be appointed to take part in the trial and inspect the vessel. Normally buyers will pay to hoist the boat out of the water for a full survey.
The body responsible for the boat brokerage should be present during these inspections to ensure that the survey is carried out correctly. They should then advise of any problems and negotiate a plan to rectify any problems and document these amendments in the purchase documents.
The boat brokerage agent is the middleman in all the negotiations. They are there to ensure that all parties are satisfied and there will be no actions taken after the sale has been agreed.
